If you have important files on your computer and you don't want anyone sticking their nose in them, then you should start looking for a file protection solution. A good example is File Lock, which provides you with several file protection features. You can choose between various courses of action, from simply hiding your files to encrypting them.

The software is free to try, without any significant restrictions. It comes in a small package and it can be installed in just a few seconds, without any kind of complications. There are no special requirements you have to meet and you don't need powerful hardware.

You can explore several sections on the user interface, but you will spend most of your time in the first one, where you can find the software's core protection features. Locking files, hiding them or password-protecting them are the ones that will immediately come to your attention. In all cases, you only need to load the files you want to protect, through a standard Open dialog. Protected files are displayed in a list, in the same section and you can remove or modify their protection at any time.

The software's encryption function can be fond in a separate section of the interface. Encrypting a file is a simple matter of selecting it on an Open dialog and specifying a password afterwards. Decrypting files is just as easy. Furthermore, the software lets you choose between different hash modes and encryption algorithms.

A particularly useful feature is the possibility of compiling a list of trusted apps. When you lock a file, other programs won't be able to use it. However, if you add those programs to File Lock's trusted apps list, the programs will be able to use those files, even if they are locked. Additionally, the software can be deactivated, in case you need to temporarily remove the protection from all files.

If it's top of the line file protection you want, then File Lock is definitely something you should try.

Pros

The software can lock, hide, password-protect and encrypt individual files. It lets you compile a list of trusted apps, so other programs can still use them. Its interface has a simple design and its controls are easy to understand.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to address.
